If you own a motor vehicle you will have the monthly expense of auto insurance no ifs ands or buts. Just about every state has laws that govern insurance coverage. insurance is for your benefit. If you have an accident your insurance will keep you from an economic catastrophe. This is especially true if you are the one found at fault. The following is a list of 5 tips to help reduce your monthly premiums.

Think about what you are doing. If you are making a purchase of a new car then purchase one that has a high safety rating. If you purchase a vehicle with a high safety rating you are going to pay less on your premiums. A high safety rating means you are less likely to be seriously injured in an accident and that will cost the insurance company less.

Check over your coverage and get rid of things you do not use. For example what is the age of your car? If you are driving an old car then collision and comprehensive insurance would really be of no benefit to you. In most cases the deductible would be more than the claim.

Visit the N.A.D.A. website or you can visit Edmunds and find out what the value of your vehicle is. You can raise your deductible to $1,000 and this will decrease your monthly premium. This is kind of like playing Russian roulette. I would not recommend doing this if you are living on a tight budget because you will have more out of pocket expense if you have an accident.

If you have teenagers in the home that are of driving age you can talk to your agent about discounts for good students. Now what qualifies as a good student will vary from one agency to the next. Being a good student does not necessarily mean they have to be on the honor role. Just talk to your insurance rep it can never hurt.

Make sure your teens take part in any driver's education courses through their school as this may help them qualify for a discount. Do not just assume that your insurance agent is looking out for you shop around. Just because someone is using a gecko in their cute little advertising campaigns does not mean you can really save 15% on car insurance. Who do you think pays for that cute advertising campaign?

One size coverage does not fit all. Examine your policy, research your situation, look for the situations that may cause you to qualify for a discount, and be smart about your shopping then you too will enjoy significant savings. Do not rely on your insurance company to do what is best for you. Get with it and do the research and get the information you need to save big.
